Notes: Cory Doctorow on Meta’s escalating legal campaign against whistleblower Sarah Wynn-Williams (author of Careless People). Meta’s arbitrator (a company-paid lawyer, not a judge) has assessed $11M+ in “damages” against her for public comments about her book, under NDA/non-disparagement/binding-arbitration terms in her employment contract. Most recently, Meta claims her silent, wordless appearance on a panel at the Hay Festival was itself a further breach, and is seeking still more damages. Wynn-Williams has now sued to invalidate the contract. Tangential to BPA’s core surveillance work but relevant to corporate accountability/whistleblower-protection advocacy, and a vivid illustration of forced-arbitration clauses being used to silence critics.
